Calculate high school quarterback passer rating. Evaluate prep performance using the NFHS-adapted rating formula.
Calculate High School Quarterback Rating
Evaluating prep quarterbacks requires understanding the scale they are judged on. Our high school passer rating tool uses the standard High School evaluation formula (which mathematically mirrors the NFL structure, but with adjusted expectations) to rank Friday night performances.
Prep Football Evaluation
High school offensive schemes vary wildly—from the Wing-T to the Air Raid. This metric standardizes passing efficiency regardless of the offense’s run-pass balance.
Recruiting Standard
Use the exact same 0-158.3 scale that professional scouts and college recruiters mentally use to benchmark a high school prospect’s aerial ceiling.
Evaluating Prep Passing Efficiency
Unlike the NFL or NCAA, there is no single mandated “National High School” formula forced upon every state athletic association. However, the overwhelming majority of prep scouting platforms, state associations, and statistical trackers utilize the Pro (NFL) formula structure for simplicity.
Because high school teams play with a wider hashmark spacing and varying levels of defensive secondary talent, the expectations within the 0 to 158.3 scale are drastically different.
A rating that is considered purely “Average” in the NFL (85.0) might actually be considered a highly exceptional, blue-chip recruiting number in a competitive high school division.
High School Rating Scale & Benchmarks
Because completion percentages and yards per attempt are naturally lower in prep football, the tiers are shifted downward. A 100+ rating is exceptional at this level.
D1 Prospect
100+
Elite regional talent, likely a Power-5 recruit.
Excellent
85–100
All-State candidate, highly efficient.
Average
60–85
Standard high school varsity starter.
Poor
Below 60
Struggling with accuracy or turnovers.
High School Quarterback FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about passer rating and how to calculate it.
Which formula is used for High School prospect ratings?
Most recruiting databases and prep sports platforms use the NFL's 0 to 158.3 formula. Because high school stats are harder to come by, utilizing the universally understood Pro scale makes it easier for scouts to contextualize the numbers.
Is a 90 passer rating impressive for a high school junior?
Yes. While a 90 might be considered strictly 'average' or 'functional' in the modern NFL, high school passing games deal with tighter windows relative to receiver skill. Achieving a 90+ rating across a whole season demonstrates excellent accuracy and decision-making.
Does High School rating include rushing yards?
No. High school quarterbacks often rush for significant yardage, but traditional quarterback rating formulas evaluate passing exclusively.
Why do some high school state associations use the NCAA formula?
A small minority of associations align themselves closely with NCAA rules rather than NFHS/NFL rules. If your state actively uses the college formula, you should use our College Passer Rating Calculator instead.
