Calculate Career NFL Passing Efficiency

A quarterback can easily have one hot season, but maintaining an elite passer rating over a 15-year career is the true mark of a Hall of Famer. Enter a player’s lifetime completions, attempts, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions here.

Volume vs Efficiency

A quarterback like Brett Favre had immense volume (71,838 yards) but lower efficiency (86.0 rating) due to interceptions. Compare careers properly.

Era Adjusted Analysis

Because passing rules changed significantly post-2004, a career rating of 85 in the 1990s might be equivalent to a 95+ rating today.

All-Time Career Rating Leaders

The NFL’s all-time leaderboard for career passer rating is heavily skewed toward modern quarterbacks. Thanks to rules protecting wide receivers and quarterbacks, passing efficiency across the league has never been higher.

Currently, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers battle for the #1 all-time spot, both hovering comfortably above a 103.0 career rating.

In contrast, Hall of Fame legends from previous eras (like Joe Montana or Dan Marino) sit lower down the list, despite dominating their respective decades. When evaluating career rating, context is everything.

Career Rating FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about passer rating and how to calculate it.

How is career passer rating calculated?

The formula is identically equal to the single-season NFL formula. Instead of using stats from one game or season, you simply input the quarterback's grand total career passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions into the formula.

Who has the highest career passer rating in NFL history?

Currently, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers alternate at the top of the all-time career list with ratings above 103.5 (minimum 1,500 attempts).

Why do older Hall of Famers have lower career ratings?

Rules regarding pass interference, illegal contact, and roughing the passer were vastly different prior to 2004. Defenses were allowed to be much more physical with receivers. This means a 90.0 rating in 1985 was significantly harder to achieve than a 90.0 rating in 2023.

Do playoff games count toward career passer rating?

Typically, no. NFL historical records separate regular season stats from postseason stats. If an analyst quotes a 'career passer rating', they are almost certainly referring exclusively to regular season statistics.
