What is NCAA passing efficiency?
NCAA passing efficiency is college football’s formula for summarizing a passer’s completions, attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns and interceptions. It rewards completions, yardage and touchdowns, penalizes interceptions and divides the weighted total by pass attempts.
Fans often call the result college passer rating, college QB rating or NCAA quarterback rating. It is not the same as NFL passer rating or ESPN Total QBR.

NCAA passer rating formula
The college passing-efficiency equation is:
NCAA efficiency = ((8.4 × YDS) + (330 × TD) + (100 × COMP) − (200 × INT)) ÷ ATT
Each entity–attribute pair has a defined value in the calculation:

Unlike the NFL formula, the NCAA equation does not calculate four separate components and does not clamp them at minimum or maximum values.
How to calculate college passer rating
Use this sample stat line:

- 285 passing yards

Substitute the values:
((8.4 × 285) + (330 × 3) + (100 × 22) − (200 × 1)) ÷ 30
Calculate each term:

Add the terms and divide by attempts:
(2,394 + 990 + 2,200 − 200) ÷ 30 = 179.5
The NCAA passing-efficiency rating is 179.5. The same inputs produce a 122.2 NFL passer rating because the systems use different weights and scales.
What is a good college passer rating?
A college passer rating around 140 is generally strong, 160-plus is excellent and 180-plus is elite in many modern contexts. These ranges are practical interpretation bands, not official NCAA labels. Competition level, season, offensive system and sample size affect what counts as average.

The NCAA originally constructed the formula so that 100 represented the average across its historical reference period. Passing efficiency has increased since the system was introduced, so modern comparisons should use the relevant season rather than treating 100 as a permanent present-day average.
Interpret an NCAA rating
Is there a perfect college passer rating?
No universal maximum or perfect NCAA passing-efficiency rating exists. The formula has no component caps, so additional yards, touchdowns and completions can continue increasing the score.
For example, one completed 99-yard touchdown pass with no interception would produce:
((8.4 × 99) + 330 + 100) ÷ 1 = 1,261.6
That result is mathematically valid but not a useful season benchmark because it comes from one attempt. A qualified season rating is far more stable.

NCAA passing efficiency vs Total QBR
NCAA efficiency is a box-score passing statistic. ESPN Total QBR is a contextual 0–100 metric that can include passes, designed runs, scrambles, sacks, fumbles, penalties, down, distance, score and opponent strength.

Is the NCAA formula used in high school football?
There is no single universal high-school passer rating formula used by every state, association and statistics provider. Some high-school reports use the NCAA equation, some use an NFL-style calculation, and others publish only the underlying box-score statistics.
Before comparing high-school players, verify which formula the league, school or data provider uses. When no local method is specified, the NCAA formula can be used as a consistent analytical reference, but the result should be labeled “NCAA-style passing efficiency” rather than an official nationwide high-school rating.
What the college rating measures—and misses
NCAA passing efficiency measures outcomes recorded on pass attempts. It captures accuracy, passing yardage, scoring frequency and interception avoidance.
It does not directly measure:
- Quarterback rushing production
- Sacks or sack yardage
- Fumbles
- Down-and-distance difficulty
- Score and time remaining
- Receiver separation or yards after the catch
- Opponent strength
Use it as a transparent passing baseline. For broader quarterback evaluation, combine the rating with rushing, sack, pressure and situational data.
